An intelligent approach to waste management
Bebat, a non-profit environmental organization, is well known for its collection, sorting and recycling of batteries in Belgium for over 25 years. To remain at the world level, the organization is constantly improving its operations.
In 2014 Bebat launched a new app called Recyle!, together with Fost Plus. This app helps people sort their waste in a handy and simple way.
After multiple successful years in the App and Play Store, the Recycle! app needed a reboot. Even though this was only supposed to be a reinvention of the previous version, it ended up turning into a complete new data management system and multi-platform web tool.
We created a new app and website to assist Belgian citizens with their recycling - everything from collection dates to the sorting guide and finding your nearest recycling point. It was important that the app would be an inclusive eco-system that empowers all the organisations involved in recycling- and waste management throughout Belgium.
Because Recycle! involves dozens of stakeholders across Belgium, we wanted to build a platform that could simultaneously serve consumers and organise information from these stakeholders. For that reason, excellent user-experience and intelligent data management was our number-one priority. By doing numerous user tests, we were able to refine the information architecture and ensure a smooth experience.
To integrate the stakeholders' data into the new app, we had to build a custom content management system. This system allowed them to organise their wealth of information and present it in a simple, user-friendly format to the Recycle! users.
Last but not least, we tried to create a delightful experience for the users by adding convenient interactions and fun details throughout the app. We also added a series of animated illustrations to make the onboarding just a bit more memorable.
With the new Recycle!-ecosystem we created a better tool for everybody involved to disseminate information and connect with their audiences. In the future we want to add new features to the platform, based on customer input. This input is gathered and managed through an intelligent customer support system, putting users directly in touch with the relevant stakeholders.
